Common causes of serious car accidents

Unfortunately, preventative measures to keep people safe on the road do not always work perfectly. Even very cautious and experienced drivers may experience an accident at some point.

Because accidents are so common, it is imperative that people drive defensively and keep their guard up. Here are some of the most common causes of serious car accidents that drivers should be aware of.

Distraction

The leading cause of accidents is inattention while driving. There are a variety of distractions that can impair a driver’s ability to concentrate such as using a cellphone, changing the settings on an audio system, or interacting with passengers.

Intoxication

Drunk driving can easily result in a serious or even fatal car accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, approximately 28 people in the United States die every day because of accidents caused by the influence of alcohol.

Speeding

When people break the speed limit, they may have trouble maintaining control of their vehicle. For example, trying to turn or navigate a curve while speeding can be extremely hazardous.

Foul weather

Heavy rains and poor visibility can significantly increase drivers’ risk of involvement in an accident. Wet roadways can cause cars to hydroplane and spin out of control. Also, a slick surface makes it more difficult for people to brake in time to avoid a collision.

Even if safe drivers do everything right, they cannot assume that everyone else on the road will do everything right as well. When they are in a low or high traffic area, drivers should be vigilant at all times.
